Obituary of Edward "Waj" P. Carney

Edward "Waj" P. Carney, 90, of Hopelawn, passed away Friday, March 10, 2023 at the Venetian Care & Rehabilitation Center in South Amboy. Mr. Carney was born in Newark to the late Joseph and Anna Carney and had previously lived in South Amboy before moving to Hopelawn sixty-four years ago. Mr. Carney was a US Marine Corps Veteran of the Korean war being awarded the Purple Heart Medal. He was employed as a Foreman with ASARCO in Perth Amboy for thirty-four years before retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Parish - Holy Rosary Church, Hopelawn, serving as a Usher, Knights of Columbus, Perth Amboy, Disabled American Veterans, Woodbridge Township Post #56, Hopelawn VFW Post 1352, lifetime member of the American Legion Post 62 South Amboy. Edward was predeceased by his wife Carolyn in 2017 and two brothers William and Joseph Carney. He enjoyed woodworking, fixing things and all the tools in his garage. He is survived by his son, Jeffrey E. Carney and his wife Elizabeth of Woodbridge, his daughter, Cathleen O'Malley and her husband Christopher of Ocean, his brother, Patrick Carney of South Amboy, his two sisters, Ann Marie Pokropinski of Monroe and Margaret McQuade of South Amboy, two grandchildren Caroline and Nolan and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday 10:30 am at the Mitruska Funeral Home, Inc., 531 New Brunswick Ave., Fords. Followed by a 11:00 am mass in the Good Shepherd Parish-Holy Rosary Church, Hopelawn. Interment will follow in the Cloverleaf Memorial Park Cemetery in Woodbridge. Visitation hours will be held Wednesday from 4 pm to 7 pm. In lieu of Flowers memorial donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans at https://www.ihelpveterans.org/.
