Obituary of Robert J. Kovacs

Robert J. Kovacs, 90, of Perth Amboy, passed away Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at the Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy. Mr. Kovacs was born in Perth Amboy to the late Paul and Mary Kovacs and had lived all of his life in Perth Amboy. Robert was a Perth Amboy High School graduate of the class of 1950. Mr. Kovacs was a US Navy Veteran of Korean war, serving on the Aircraft carrier USS Mindoro. Upon returning from service he was employed by Carborumdum Co. in Keasbey. While with Carborundom basketball team Robert lead the industrial league as leading scorer. In 1956 he became a Police officer with the Perth Amboy Police Department for over thirty years retiring with the rank of Lieutenant. Robert was a member of the Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish-Our Lady Of Hungary Church, Perth Amboy, honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus Council #299, Perth Amboy, past President of the PBA Local 13, Perth Amboy and member of the Superior Officers F.O.P. lodge 80 Perth Amboy. He was predeceased by three brothers, James, Frank and George Kovacs, two sisters Mary Sakmyster and Helen Hatrak. Robert is survived by his loving wife of sixty five years, Helen, his two daughters, Kim Terry and her husband Tim of Washington, NJ, Kellie Chichester of Metuchen, NJ, five grandchildren, Katie, Shaun, Tim, Ryan and Kyle, two great granddaughters, Shaniyah, and Tessa and many nieces and nephews. One of his happiest time was 2004 when his beloved Red Sox won the world series beating the curse of the bambino. Funeral services will be held Thursday 9:30 am at the Mitruska Funeral Home, Inc., 531 New Brunswick Ave., Fords. Followed by a 10:00 am mass In the Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish-Our Lady of Hungary Church, Perth Amboy, Interment will follow in the Our Lady of Hungary Cemetery in Fords. Visitation hours will be held Wednesday from 4 pm to 7 pm.
